Hi friend! I’m Jennifer and so happy to have you pop over to my blog. Running for Rubies is the bajillionth iteration of what I wanted to create for about a year before it came to life. I debuted the blog to the world in October 2015, 6 months into motherhood and a year into life in England. The move to England was in pursuit of/ with my husband (“the Pilot”) and meant I had the chance to travel the world! But it also meant I left my beloved work as a school psychologist and had loads of time to start a new brainchild. Our Maddie-poo arrived in Spring 2015 and rocked my world. I never thought I could love a little person with every ounce of my exhausted soul but she proved me wrong from the first breath. Since her arrival, I’ve been prayerfully searching my heart to be the woman and mother I need to be in this life. I began praying over Proverbs 31, praying to be half the woman described. Praying to fulfill my callings and reach out to women like my heart so joyfully desired. This is where Running for Rubies began.
A wife of noble character who can find?
She is worth far more than rubies.
Her husband has full confidence in her
and lacks nothing of value.
She brings him good, not harm,
all the days of her life.
She selects wool and flax
and works with eager hands.
I may not select wool or flax, but I want to create, learn, and share. That’s what Running for Rubies is all about. I love researching and learning and writing and cooking, so this is the place where I will do just that.
My Journey to Finding a Healthier Me
When I finished college and moved on to graduate school, I left the University of Tennessee with way more than just a degree. I left weighing in 25 pounds over where I wanted to be and with no clue how to lose the weight in a healthy way. I grew up in a southern culture where fried okra and heavy meals abound, and I didn’t know any other lifestyle. As I began graduate school, my apartment lease included access to a great local gym. I wanted a fresh start in this new city and went for my ‘consultation’ appointment to begin my gym membership. When I was weighed as part of the consultation, I was so embarrassed and horrified at the weight I’d gained. The scariest part was that I hadn’t even realized how out of shape I had become. A few tears later, the kind trainer and I worked out a plan for change: I would begin working out regularly and focus on learning a healthier diet. Easier said than done, adapting a totally new lifestyle took a great deal of effort and a major learning curve. (⇠ Including the shock that my favorite fast-food salad weighed in at a whomping 1200 calories! Eek!)
Fast forward a year and a half… I ran my first half marathon. With much hard work, learning, diligence, and dedication, I achieved something I never thought possible for me… the “big boned” and “non-athletic” type that I had boxed myself into in my mind. With that feat came a new respect for myself and my body. In the process, I had lost 25 pounds and met the love of my life. We were married soon after and have shared an exciting life together for three years. During this time I have run two more half marathons, several 5k’s and 10k’s, and I became a certified Les Mills BodyCombat Instructor. In addition to running, group fitness REALLY helped me stay on track and pushing my limits. Combat is an amazing full body workout and FUN! I loved seeing not only my weight and running times improve, but I could also see better coordination and combat skills emerging.
My journey to find a fit and healthy lifestyle has been evolving over the last 5 years. I have felt the satisfaction of meeting personal fitness goals and I must admit… it is absolutely addicting. There is nothing like getting on the scale and seeing progress, or buttoning those jeans you never imagined you’d fit in again. But so much more than that, I know the self respect I found when I made my health & fitness a priority. I fed my body with real, healthy fuel.. and I could feel the difference!!
So.. why did I join Team Beachbody? Quite simply.. life happens. Life gets busy & complicated. Beachbody is a company truly dedicated to making fitness and nutrition an easy, accessible part of your daily life… however that needs to happen! Right now, my life as a new mom means that I need easy. I can’t go for 45 minute runs or spend an hour (plus commute time) in the gym whenever I feel like it. I also can’t spend hours prepping superfood-packed, nutritious meals to fuel my body three times a day.
Beachbody’s programs are SO helpful in making sure I can get a great workout in, when it’s convenient for me, in the comfort of my home. AND Shakeology is really the ultimate meal replacement. It is packed with so many wonderful superfood nutrients! I would have to buy and prep a ridiculous amount of health foods to match the power packed into these shakes. Last but not least, Beachbody is a community of support. As a coach, I may not be standing in front of you teaching a fitness class… but I am here to encourage you, advise you, and be an advocate for you and your health.
My passion is bringing you that same feeling of accomplishment and self respect I felt when I finally made a life change and began my journey toward a healthy life. I want you to THRIVE. It can be overwhelming, but I want to help you begin making healthier choices and you CAN and WILL accomplish your goals… one day at a time 🙂
Message me using the Contact Me page for more information about joining me on my fitness journey with Beachbody! I’d love to help you find the best program to get the results you want. xoxo
